Reducing your energy bills doesn’t have to be complicated.
Reducing energy costs in your home can make a big difference in your monthly energy bill. These simple tips even done every other day can reduce your energy bill up to 5%.
Lower your thermostat
You can reduce your bill on heating as much as 10% by simply reducing your thermostat 7-10 degrees each day for around 8 hours. This is easy to do while you are at work or school then you can increase the heat when you get home if you desire.
Close the vents and doors in unused rooms.
Even just during the day to reduce the amount of area the heat spreads to within the house. The less surface area it must heat means the less energy you are consuming which in turn will lower your bill.
Run washing machines and dryers with a full load of clothes.
This is an easy switch to make if you aren’t used to it. Simply being aware of how many clothes you are putting in or how many times your laundry is done within a day/week can help you reduce your energy costs. An additional benefit is running the washer less can also help you save on your water bill.
Open your windows
On nice days, turn off your air/heat and open the windows instead. Letting the natural air cool/heat your house gives not only the heating/cooling a break, but it also allows you to potentially turn off more lights for the day and use the natural light instead. Do remember to close windows and curtains again for the night when the temperature is likely to drop and turn your heat back on!
Weatherize your home
During the winter it is helpful to reduce the amount of air leaks you may have in your home. These can be on floors, walls, ceilings, fireplaces, and windows/vents. Weather-stripping or caulking (both available at Home Depot or Lowes) can help mitigate the air leak and therefor minimize your energy loss within your home. If you don’t use your fireplace often, it may also be effective to close it then reopen it when you are ready to use it.
