The ripple effect of Stepping Stones is clear: families are stronger, awareness of reentry struggles has grown, and hope has been restored for many who once felt excluded.
LISC AmeriCorps Member Johnene Marble has seen how hard re-entry can be for people who have been previously incarcerated. That is why she created a program called Stepping Stones, in partnership with Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center. Stepping Stones was created to support formerly incarcerated individuals as they transition back into society, offering employment coaching, digital and financial literacy training, vocational skill-building, and wraparound services that provide both practical tools and emotional support.
One of the program’s most notable achievements has been its ability to bring structure to reentry services at Mary Rigg. By organizing programming and tailoring it to the unique needs of clients, Stepping Stones has created a safe and supportive environment where participants feel heard, respected, and empowered to thrive. Through vocational training tools, bus passes, group therapy, and workshops, clients have not only gained skills but also the confidence to pursue meaningful employment and rebuild their lives.
Partnerships have been vital to this success. The program was made possible thanks to a grant from LISC and AmeriCorps. Additionally, Indy Peace partnered early on to provide critical support for clients. Looking ahead, a new collaboration with Rebecca Witter and the Indiana Department of Correction Pre-Release Program will begin in the new year. This partnership will expand opportunities for reentry preparation by connecting Stepping Stones with statewide initiatives that provide education, vital records, and employment placement before release.
The ripple effect of Stepping Stones is clear: families are stronger; awareness of reentry struggles has grown, and hope has been restored for many who once felt excluded.
