Whether it’s your first time creating a resume or you’re looking to redesign yours, utilizing the right format for you can help you successfully promote yourself as an appealing potential employee. But how do you know which format is for you? Below are descriptions of two popular formats and how to know which is best for you.
Chronological:
This type of resume format is when your work, education, and accomplishments are in reverse chronological order. This means your most recent job, education, or accomplishments will be listed first followed by each previous position or education. Within this type of format, typically education is also listed in either a separate section or within the timeline as well. Additionally, you can add another section to the bottom and list skills, interests, and other qualifications you wish to tell the recruiter.
Functional:
A functional resume puts the spotlight on your skills and abilities rather than your work or education history. The main purpose of this format is for the recruiter to be able to quickly identify the skills you possess for the job and other abilities that can help you excel. Education and previous work history are typically listed in a separate section below your skills as they aren’t the main focus in this format.
Both types of formats are helpful for different individuals, industries, and times in one’s career. If you are still working on education or certifications, utilizing the functional format is better suited for you as you can immediately draw attention to the skills and abilities you already possess. The opposite is true for chronological, if you have more work experience rather than identifiable skills for the particular position you are applying for, this format is a better representation of you as a potential employee. While chronological is the more traditional and common way of formatting your resume, that doesn’t mean it is the best way for everyone.
