Laying the Foundation for Better Careers and Communities

For students in the BY Construction program, building a deck isn’t just about wood and nails, it’s about building up their community. Through hands-on training and real-world experience, they’re transforming lives.

Construction is a high-demand field, and this training equips students with the tools to step into it confidently. The program blends classroom instruction with on-site experience, giving participants both the knowledge and certifications they need to launch a new career. “Students come out with OSHA 30 and NCCER certifications,” explained Andrew Lee, Director of Workforce Programs. “From there, they can go on to do anything, from day labor to owning their own business.”

The hands-on portion of the training is made possible through a partnership with Home Repairs for Good, a nonprofit that provides free home repairs for seniors in need. Together with Mary Rigg, this collaboration ensures that students gain real-world skills while neighbors receive critical repairs they might not otherwise be able to afford. “It’s a great relationship. We each bring our own resources to the table,” Andrew added.

This year, BY Construction students helped repair the porch of Ethel Hall, a longtime Indy resident whose home had become unsafe. “I had big holes where the boards were rotted out,” Ethel shared about her front porch.

Ethel was scared someone would get seriously hurt. Thanks to the BY Construction students, Ethel now has a sturdy porch and peace of mind.

Guided by mentors like Daniel Perryman, a BY graduate turned navigator, students are supported every step of the way, “I’ve seen BY change lives, including mine,” Daniel shared. “It gives students a feel for being on a worksite, how to communicate, and how to use the tools.”
