Summer Day Camp Keeps Kids Safe & Engaged

Summer can be hard for kids and families impacted by low-income and urban poverty in southwest Indianapolis. Many parents struggle to find safe, affordable care for their kids while they work. Many parents who also rely on free breakfast and lunch programs during the school year struggle all summer to put enough food on their family's table. And, kids from low-income families lose, on average, more than two months worth of reading achievement compared to kids from middle-income families. In the midst of these challenges, kids in southwest Indianapolis find a safe, fun, affordable place to go each day where they can learn and grow--Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center and our satellite Center, George T. Goodwin Community Center.

For ten weeks this summer, our two sites are providing exciting opportunities for 180 at-risk kids, ages 4-13, from 6:30 am-6 pm. Actvities include:

  • recreational activities (swimming, games, and non-traditional sports like hockey)
  • academic enrichment activities
  • field trips
  • college visits (kids ages 11-13 will visit 10 different colleges and universities throughout Central Indiana this summer)
  • healthy, kid-friendly meals
