Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center
Programs Computer Training Program

Since 1992, Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center has demonstrated a commitment to preparing candidates for employment who meet the expectations of Indianapolis employers. We offer computer training, free of charge, for individuals who are serious about becoming employed full-time.

  • Computer training includes 200 hours of employment preparation occurring over a 10-week period of time.
  • Each participant is assigned to a computer to learn the basic fundamentals of word processing and spreadsheets using Microsoft Word and Excel. As they progress, participants can also be introduced to Access and PowerPoint.
  • Since a large part of being able to use the computer involves keyboarding skills, emphasis is placed on keyboarding proficiency and lab time is incorporated into the weekly schedule for computer practice.
  • Participants are tested on their computer skills and receive a coursework transcript at the conclusion of training.
  • Job Search Workshops and Life Skills Education Groups accompany Computer Training. Individuals learn a wide variety of career search strategies and become familiar with resources commonly used in the career search process. Unlimited use of the Mary Rigg Career Resource Room is available.
  • Life Skills Education focuses on the soft skills that often make the difference between success and failure in building a career and managing personal responsibilities. Examples of topics include communication techniques, verbal and written grammar skills, health awareness, and coping with stress.

  • Classes are five days a week for four hours each day.  Participants must commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week.  Arrangements will be made to comply with additional requirements necessary for IMPACT or Welfare to Work.

  • Class times are 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Interested persons should call 639-6106 to receive additional information about Computer Training.

Applicants must be scheduled for a personal interview and an employment assessment before starting Computer Training.
